Born in Florence in 1873, Galileo Chini’s career began with working in the ” Giunti ” ceramic workshop in Bellariva and in the “Richard Ginori” handmade Italian décor‎ factory in Sesto Fiorentino. His irrepressible artistic spirit led him to founding the ‘L’Arte della Ceramica’ in Florence in 1897 where he was the artistic director. In 1902, Galileo Chini and his cousin, Chino,  established a firm called Chini and Company at Mugello, and later the Fornaci (Kilns) di San Lorenzo. He also painted canvases that were acquired by Italian museums and designed opera sets for his close friend Giacomo Puccini. Galileo Chini created earthenware vases of rich and colorful luster decoration and his high-quality pieces had a profound effect on the style and exposure of Italian ceramics.
The artistic journey of Galileo was marked by progressive approaches to the Liberty style and to the Viennese Secession movement during the evolution of Italian Art Nouveau. He simultaneously expanded into a multitude of artistic expressions as a decorator, painter, designer, town planner, ceramic innovator and sceneographer.
With his vases he presented himself at the international exhibitions in London (1898), Paris (1900), Turin (1902) and the Brussels and St Petersburg expositions where he won awards. He made a strong contribution to establishing Art Nouveau in Italy at the turn of the century which had the name of Atre Liberty and also Floreal and Belle Epoque
From 1902 to 1914 he was entrusted with the construction of some of the halls of the Venice Biennale while he also presented some of his works up to 1936. He also decorated numerous public and private buildings including the Dusit Palace in Bangkok for King Rama V.
Chini’s veratile and illustrious career in art and craftsmanship is still engrossing and a wonderful source of aesthetic enrichment.
